Fire Department - Public Education - Child Passenger Safety
 Did you know?
- 96% of all child safety seats in Florida are improperly installed.
- In Pinellas County nearly 95% were improperly installed.
- In 2001, there were 14,776 traffic crashes in Pinellas County.
- 13,312 people were injured in those crashes and 100 were killed.
- On average there are 700 traffic crashes per day in Florida.
Florida's biggest problem when it comes to child passenger safety is non-use of restraint systems. Over 75% of children under the age of 15 were unrestrained in fatal crashes. Either they were not restrained in child safety seats or they were not wearing seat belts. When used correctly, child restraints and seat belts can reduce injuries and fatalities by 50-70%. Unfortunately, many children still ride unrestrained in vehicles despite the existence of child restraint laws in all 50 states. Drivers have a responsibility to ensure that all passengers, especially infants and children, are properly and securely restrained in the vehicle.
Child safety seats have been around for many years, but due to the numerous of models available and the various vehicle seat belt systems, it can still be confusing for parents when it comes to choosing and installing a child safety seat in their vehicle.
