Hazardous Materials Response Team




hazmat_2Hazardous Materials Response Team is a specialized team of firefighters trained to respond and mitigate emergencies involving hazardous materials.   Pinellas Park Fire Department's HAZMAT unit is part of a multi-jurisdictional response team is comprised of five fire departments within Pinellas County.

hazmat_1All technicians are trained to respond to a variety of incidents including gas leaks, train derailments, tanker truck accidents, or any incident involving toxic substances.

Each department responds to an emergency with up to six technicians in its own Hazardous Materials truck. Pinellas Park's HAZMAT team responds in a 1977 Volvo tractor with custom trailer.

The truck carries specialized air monitoring and chemical testing equipment as well as chemical resistant suits and decontamination appliances. Currently, Pinellas Park Fire Department has 18 firefighters assigned to the HAZMAT team.
