Station 33 History
Engine Company #33 was first put into service in 1912 by a group of volunteers who called themselves Pinellas Park Fire Company #1. A firehouse was built at 7625 60th Street and firemen were called to fires by the ringing of a bell mounted on a pole. The company answered alarms with a hose wagon until the winter of 1913 when they took delivery of two new pieces of equipment, a shiny red horse-drawn chemical cart, and ladder wagon. In 1925 the first mechanized fire apparatus was purchased, a brand new chain driven American LaFrance triple combination pumper. It answered its first fire call only hours after delivery. A new firehouse was built in 1927 at 5745 Park Boulevard and also served as the Pinellas Park City Hall. By 1957 the department had outgrown the compact station so plans were made to construct a larger firehouse. Two years later, firemen moved into their new quarters at 7680 59th Street. In 1961, Engine Company #1 got its first piece of new fire apparatus in 36 years when a 1960 Ford 750 GPM pumper was delivered by rail car. An aerial truck company was added in 1974 and in 1976 a rescue company was put into service. The firehouse was again relocated in 1979 when the Rescue, Engine, and Aerial Truck Companies moved into a brand new station at 5000 82nd Avenue. In 1985 a county wide numbering system changed the way that fire stations were numbered. As a result, Station #1 became Station #33. In 1994, Engine Company #33 responded to 3065 alarms, the most calls ever for a single engine in Pinellas Park. It was also the most active company in Pinellas County. In 2001, a $860,000 expansion of Station #33 resulted in new living quarters for the companies. The project added 3,000 square feet to the existing building including 14 new cubicles for current and future personnel. The existing kitchen, dayroom and apparatus room were completely renovated. The adjoining Fire and Life Safety division received a new sprinkler system, new offices for fire inspectors, and a break room.
