Fire Department - Public Education - Telemedic
Pinellas Park Fire Department offers a specialized program called Tele-Medic. This program is designed to assist rescue personnel in gathering your medical information in an emergency.
Basically, Tele-Medic works like this: You provide us with your name, address, and phone number.
Pinellas Park Fire Department provides you with a medical information sheet and a magnetic pouch. Fill out the medical information sheet and insert it into the pouch. You can also insert any other important documents such as a Living Will, DNR, or Family Contact List. Affix the pouch to a visible magnetic surface, such as your refrigerator.
If emergency crews are ever dispatched to your home, they will be informed through the 911 system that you are a participant in the Tele-Medic program. The crew will be able to retrieve your information from the pouch if you are unable to provide the information yourself. We do not enter any or your medical information into the computer database, only that you participate in the program.
How does the 911 System work?
- When you dial 911, your call goes to a centralized communications command post.
- A 911 operator answers your call and determines what the problem is.
- If the call is police related, it is transferred to the police department for that district.
- If it is a medical emergency, you are transferred to a paramedic for lifesaving procedures as the fire department is being dispatched.
- Fire department rescues and advanced life support (ALS) engines are equipped to handle a variety of medical problems.
- Average response time is 4 minutes.
- If transportation to a hospital is needed, an ambulance is dispatched to the scene.
What are the benefits of the Tele-Medic program?
- Existing medical conditions, current medications, allergies, primary physician, emergency phone numbers and any other information that will help in treatment is readily available to the emergency crews.
- You could be in diabetic shock, unconscious, suffering from a stroke, or any number of things and not be able to respond.
- A family member could cause you to become upset and you wouldn't be able to recall specific information.
- The more they know about you, the better they will be able to treat you.
- Tele-Medic provides the information you may not be able to provide at the time.
- Signing up for the program guarantees that you and family members are entered in the county systemthat way if we respond to an emergency at your home, dispatch can see that you are a participant of the Tele-Medic program.
- If you live outside Pinellas Park, contact your local fire department about Tele-Medic or Vial-of-Life, as it is sometimes called.
- The program is free. There is no charge for any of the materials. If any of your medical information changes, be sure to update the checklist inside Tele-Medic Pouch. There is no need to contact us unless you move from your current address.
