Fire Department - Public Education - Using a Fire Extinguisher
Proper training in using a fire extinguisher is essential. Portable fire extinguishers, when used properly, can save lives and property by putting out a small fire in the workplace or home.

Extinguishers come in different shapes and sizes but operate basically the same way.

When using an extinguisher, remember the four-step procedure "PASS" (P A S S - Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep):

  1. PULL the pin at the top of the extinguisher. This unlocks the handle or operating lever so you can discharge the extinguishing agent.

  2. AIM the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire.

  3. SQUEEZE the handle or lever to discharge the extinguishing agent. Releasing the handle will stop the discharge.

  4. SWEEP the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire until the flames appear to be out. Keep an eye on the fire to make sure it does not re-ignite. If it does, repeat the process.
