Report Number: 2008-8343

Motorcycle Passenger Killed in Traffic Crash

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, at approximately 4:15 p.m., a traffic crash occurred at Park Boulevard at 52nd Street resulting in the death of an adult female motorcycle passenger.  Robert Mauriello, 70, of Indian Rocks Beach, was operating a 2006 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic with his wife Janet, 67, as a passenger.  The Mauriello's were heading east in the median lane of Park Boulevard behind a 2001 Honda Prelude being driven by David Monroe, 33, of St. Petersburg.  Mr. Monroe stopped to yield to an ambulance responding in emergency mode, through the intersection.  Mr. Mauriello applied his brakes and the motorcycle went onto its right side and skid  a short distance into the rear of the Honda.  Mrs. Mauriello was ejected into the center lane and immediately struck by an east bound 1997 Dodge Dakota being driven by James Harrison, 36, of Lithia, FL.  Mrs. Mauriello suffered multiple severe injuries to her torso, back and neck, and extremities.

The Mauriello's were transported to Northside Hospital where Mrs. Mauriello was pronounced deceased by medical staff at 4:45p.m.  Mr. Mauriello was treated for minor abrasions. The damage to the vehicles involved was minor, and the Mauriello's were wearing protective helmets.

Mr. Mauriello told investigators he and his wife were both experienced motorcycle riders who  had been riding for nearly 50 years together.  None of the drivers showed signs of impairment.   The investigation will continue, however no charges are expected at this stage of the investigation.
