Robbery Suspects Arrested After Pursuit

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, at approximately 8:33 p.m., patrol units responded to a strong arm robbery of a customer at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 8001 US 19.  The suspects drove up to the victim, Bobbie Winkelmann, 50, of Clearwater and grabbed her purse which was hanging on her shoulder.  At the time, Winkelmann was walking to her car with her adult daughter and a 4 year old granddaughter in a shopping cart.  Winkelmann was knocked to the ground and briefly drug along by the car suffering some scrapes.  Witnesses said the suspects fled in the Red Jeep Cherokee north on US 19.

Minutes later patrol officers located a car matching the description at US 19 and Bryan Dairy Road.  Subsequently, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the 6100 block of Bryan Dairy Road as the Jeep drove west.  The driver fled and our officers pursued the Jeep.  As they drove west, speeds reached 70 to 75 miles per hour.  Tire deflation devices were set up near Belcher Road, however the suspect was able to avoid directly striking them.  Just west of Belcher Road the suspect struck a curb and damaged the passenger side tires causing them to lose all air, significantly reducing the speed of the Jeep.   The Jeep continued west to Longwood Drive where it turned South into the Bardmoor subdivision, then turning west on Bardmoor Place to Starkey Road.  The Jeep turned south on Starkey Road where officers attempted to box it in, to no avail.  As the officers tried to adjust their positions, the driver began to ram a supervisor's car, striking it three times in the rear and sides.  This caused the supervisors car to spin, along with the suspects Jeep.  As the Jeep spun it came into contact with another patrol cruiser and both the Jeep and the cruiser went off the road into the ditch on the west side of Starkey Road at 100th Avenue N.

Officers converged on the car and the suspects surrendered without further resistance.  At this time officers found the ignition to be missing on the Jeep.  The registered owner, Jessica Scevola of St. Petersburg, was located and it was discovered that her Jeep had been recently stolen.

Winkelmann's personal property was located throughout the Jeep.  She suffered minor scrapes and was treated and released at the scene.  The officer whose car was rammed suffered minor back injuries.  The supervisor's car suffered moderate damage and the second patrol car had negligible damage.
