Bicyclist Struck, Injured After Moving Into Path of Car
On Friday, January 7th, 2011, at 10:49 PM, police and emergency medical personnel responded to a serious injury crash on US 19 at Gateway Centre Boulevard. Witnesses said the bicyclist, who was initially on the concrete median, moved into the path of a northbound 2008 Volkswagen Jetta. The left front and left side of the Jetta struck the rear wheel of the bicycle causing significant damage to both the car and bicycle.
The Jetta was driven by Jason Lane, 30, of Clearwater, Florida. He did not suffer any injuries, but the car had enough damage, (broken windshield, flat tire, etc…), that it had to be towed from the scene.
The cyclist, identified as Reginald Hunter, 52, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center. He suffered multiple injuries, including lower body and head wounds. Preliminary indications are that the cyclist was likely impaired. Hunter was wearing dark clothing and had no lights on the bicycle, making it difficult for motorists to see him.
All northbound lanes of US 19 were closed for approximately 40 minutes, and then limited closures were in effect until just after 1:00 AM as crash investigators completed their work. The roadway is now clear.
The investigation is continuing and the appropriate charges, if any, will be made upon its completion.
Released: Lieutenant Paul J. Andrews, PIO
