Motorcyclist Injured after Collision Knocks him off

Case# 2011-8206

On Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at approximately 10:08 pm, officers from the Pinellas Park Police Department were on the scene of a crash being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol in the northbound lanes of US 19 on the 126th Avenue overpass.

The crash being worked by the Highway Patrol, which was reported around 9:40 pm, involved a car striking a metal object that was subsequently thrown into another motorcycle, disabling both the car, (flat tire), and the motorcycle.  As traffic slowed for this incident, a motorcycle ran into the back of another car.  There was damage to this car and motorcycle, but no reported injuries.

While emergency crews were working this crash, northbound traffic was slowed due to the emergency vehicles in the area.  Three motorcyclists happened to be coming through the area at the same time and were in the left lane moving at less then 20 miles per hour.  Witnesses say that Pedro Manuel Perez, 50, of Palm Harbor, was looking to his right at the initial crash scene and as he accelerated he ran into the rear of a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven by Randall Dean Shoudt, 44 of Clearwater, FL.  Perez was driving a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle.  The impact knocked both motorcycles down and the drivers onto the road

As Perez tumbled on the roadway, a third motorcycle, a 2000 Honda Valkarie being driven by Anthony Francese, 67, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, attempted to stop however his motorcycle slid into Perez.  Francese was also thrown from his motorcycle.

Perez suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to, and admitted, to a local hospital.  Shoudt and Francese suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene.  Perez and Shoudt were not wearing helmets.

Officers from the traffic homicide unit are continuing their investigation and will decide if any charges will be made when the investigation is complete.
