Detectives Investigating Shooting – Suspect in Custody

On Friday, July 25, 2008, at 1:03 a.m., patrol officers responded to 7231 Cedar Court N. to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the victim in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the lower body. Witnesses described a Gold Chrysler fleeing the scene, occupied by a lone black male suspect. The vehicle description was immediately broadcast by radio to Pinellas Park police units as well as to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and the St. Petersburg Police Department.

At approximately 1:09 a.m., Deputy Jimmy Vickers, assigned to the canine unit with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department, spotted a similar vehicle north on U.S. 19 exiting into northbound 49 Street. He was able to get the tag number from the car as it turned west on 118th Avenue near 49th Street. Just prior to this, Pinellas Park officers on the scene of the shooting were given the tag number of the car from witnesses, and it matched the one on the car Deputy Vickers was behind. Deputy Vickers waited for additional units to assist in stopping the car. Units from the Sheriff's Office, Pinellas Park Police Department, and a helicopter (From the Sheriff's Office) were dispatched.

The Chrysler drove north on 30 Court, a dead end. At 1:12 a.m., the driver of the Chrysler circled through a parking lot 11901 30 Court N and accelerated rapidly, now obviously attempting to flee from Deputy Vickers. The suspect fled south on 30 Court and turned east onto 118th Avenue North at a high rate of speed. The suspect continued east and at 1:15 a.m. crashed through a chain link gate and fence in the 2200 block of 118th Avenue, and then into a 4 foot tall dirt barrier. The car suffered significant front end damage.

The driver, Roberts, exited the car and fled over a fence and into the brush east of the location. Patrol units from the Pinellas Park Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office secured the area and the sheriff's helicopter provided additional support. At 1:29 a.m. Roberts was taken into custody a short distance from the crash scene, in chest deep water and brush.

Evidence was recovered linking Roberts to the shooting. Also, a sawed-off shotgun investigators believe was used in the crime was recovered hidden, near the scene of the shooting.

Roberts has been taken into custody and is being interviewed by detectives.

So far, he is being charged by the Sheriff's Office with:

Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding
Driving with No Valid Driver's License.
Pinellas Park detectives anticipate charging him with:
