General Guidelines

  • Newcomers are always welcome, but we ask that you sit in on one meeting before sharing your work. Newcomers are encouraged to give feedback, however.
  • Please arrive about five minutes before the start of the meeting, especially if you're a newcomer or want feedback.
  • We read short stories, novel excerpts, memoir, and poetry.
  • Work must be written for a general audience and contain little profanity, sex, drug use, or graphic violence (PG-13).
  • While not required, please bring 5 - 10 copies of your work for the group to read along with you. Copies will be returned to you immediately after your feedback session.

Feedback Procedure

Everyone who has work to share writes their name on the Critique Sheet. The facilitator picks someone at random, and that person is asked to tell the group about the work and what kind of feedback they’re looking for, then they get eight minutes to read an excerpt. After that, all group members—newcomers included—are encouraged to say something constructive about the work. If we can’t get to everyone who wanted to share that day, then those people are given priority at the next meeting.

Mission Statement

The primary purpose of this group is to produce better drafts by sharing our work with the group and listening with an open mind to feedback. Please keep in mind that this is a give-and-take process, and your feedback to others is as important as sharing your own work.

The secondary purpose of this group is to create a strong community of local writers who motivate and help each other to achieve their writing goals. You are encouraged to share your email address with anyone whose work genuinely interests you or whose comments you find particularly helpful.

If you have any comments, suggestions, concerns, or questions, call 727-369-0667 and ask to speak to AnnMarie. Mention you’re calling about the writers group.
