In 1992 a tornado struck the northern portion of Pinellas Park devastating both residential neighborhoods and industrial buildings near Pinellas Park High School. In their work as general contractors, Jimmy England (left) and Terry England (right) of England Brothers Construction, Inc., re-built several of these businesses and ended up with a few good salvaged components which England Brothers retained for future use.
Committee
At the urging of Councilmen Rick Butler and Ed Taylor, England Brothers Construction, Inc., agreed to build a band shell with help from others. A committee was formed to design and construct a permanent band shell at the Park just north of City Hall. The committee consisted of England Brothers Construction, Inc. (Contractor of Record), Building Director Mike Gustafson, Councilman Rick Butler, Assistant City Manager Tom Shevlin, and Streets and Drainage Director Randy Roberts.
England Brothers Construction, Inc., worked closely with Acoustical Engineer Dave Fagen and Shields E. Clark P.E. to recycle the salvaged structural components from the 1992 Tornado to achieve the most efficient profile, design a hurricane resistant, maintenance free, clear span, permanent band shell with the necessary accouterments and utilities.
The Band Shell was constructed at no cost to the City other than staff time to review the design, surplus fill from Streets and Drainage Division and Electrical installations by City staff.
The following Pinellas Park Chamber Members also contributed to the effort: Joswig Construction – Masonry and Concrete work, Mullins Enterprises – Concrete pumping services, F & H Plumbing – Plumbing and fixtures, Justin’s Stone and Stucco – Stucco work, Central Florida Testing – Third party testing Lab, Yagmin Drywall and Framing- Interior framing and finishes, Aluminum Craftsmen – Aluminum railings.
The City of Pinellas Park was presented with the Future of the Region Award by Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council for the best Public Private Partnership project in 1999.
England Brothers Park is 10.74 acres.
